Chapter Twelve
I didnât like the fact that John Brown was hanging around the murder scene, so I called Cade, and we decided to take a drive out there. There probably wouldnât be anything to see since the police had already gone over everything. But why on earth would be out there? It didnât make any sense. And then there was the guy who came into the newspaper office. Three men confronted Tim several weeks earlier? Where was his business partner, James McAllister, when the three men confronted him?
I glanced at Cade as he drove. âDo you have anything new on the case?â
He glanced at me as he drove. âNothing much yet. We got the report back from the medical examiner, and it was a deer rifle that was used to kill him. We had assumed that it was some sort of hunting rifle, but now we know for sure.â
âAnd his soon-to-be ex-wife owns deer hunting rifles,â I reminded him.
He nodded. âAn awful lot of people around here do. They like their hunting here in Sparrow.â
That was a fact. Sparrow had long been known as a hunterâs haven during the fall and winter. With the river and lake so close by, and the woods that flanked the town, tourists came from miles around to hunt and fish.
âDid you track down John Brown yet?â
He nodded. âYeah, I found the cabin heâs staying at, but when I stopped by, he wasnât around. Iâll try again in the morning.â
âI hope he hasnât left for New Mexico.â
âYou and me both,â he said, and pulled off the highway and onto the side of the road. He parked near the area I had parked the day Maggie and I had found Timâs body.
âWeâve been all through these woods. Iâm sure we wonât find anything, but I do wonder what that guy was up to,â Cade said.
We got out of the car, and I snapped Maggieâs leash onto her collar and let her out of the back seat. âReady for a walk, Maggie?â She wagged her tail and whined to be turned loose.
I hurried to catch up to Cade. His long legs took bigger steps than mine. The leaves crunched beneath our boots as we headed in the direction of where we found Timâs body. It was late afternoon, and there was a cool chill in the air. I wished Iâd brought a light jacket with me.
Cade looked over his shoulder and reached a hand back to me, and I hurried and grabbed it. He slowed down, matching my stride, and we continued walking.
âOne of these days weâve got to come out here and just take a nice leisurely walk when we arenât thinking about a crime scene.â
He chuckled. âWhatâs the matter? Are you tired of crime scenes?â
I nodded. âIâm just tired of murders. Why canât people just keep to themselves?â
He chuckled again. âIâm glad you didnât go into law enforcement.â
âNope. Believe me, there is no chance of that ever happening.â
I may have enjoyed snooping around once a murder had been committed, but I hated the fact that someone had lost their life.
